Person Centred Counselling
Person Centred Counselling is a non intrusive, non directive, holistic approach which was developed by Carl Rogers and is essentially a philosophy rather than a technique. The emphasis is on the relationship between the client and the counsellor where the core conditions of empathy, honesty and respect deemed necessary and sufficient by Rogers, apply.
The approach is rooted in the humanistic philosophy and belief that a person has the capacity to move towards a more fulfilling way of being. Perception of self can be coloured or distorted by ‘conditions of worth’ or interjects from childhood and an individual’s internal valuing process can be compromised. Response can be repression of personality deemed unacceptable in order to gain acceptance, approval and love.
